As we progress into  fall and winter, a change in wardrobe isn’t the only thing you have to worry about, you also have to take measures to protect your family’s health. Now that the cold and flu season has arrived, here are four steps you can take to help keep you and your family healthy.

Make sure everyone gets enough sleep.

Besides being well rested, adequate sleep promotes a feeling of overall well being. During the colder seasons the body is prone to more stress due to extreme weather changes. A lack of sleep can leave the body susceptible to viruses such as the flu.

Experimental studies show that there is a link between lack of sleep and the body’s immune system. The immune system is made up of a variety of cells. T-cells decrease when a person is sleep deprived. Celebrating Women’s Health Through Awareness

Starting on Sunday, May 11th, National Women’s Health Week begins with a mission: to emphasize the health threats facing women, and to educate both the public and practitioners alike about maladies and/or symptoms that present in women.  Mother’s Day already had us at New York Wellness and MediSpa considering women’s specialized healthcare needs, but National Women’s Health Week really got our cogs turning. We thought it might be prudent to go over one of the biggest health problems that face women today: heart disease.

Heart disease kills one of every four women, meaning it is a serious health threat facing American women. This statistic alone has shaped contemporary protocols for annual examinations, making a yearly EKG standard with most practices. Heart disease can include a wide variety of problems specific to the heart. Coronary artery disease is the most common and bears the highest risk of sudden heart attack. Heart failure and complications from heart arrhythmia can also classify as heart disease.

You can reduce your risks for heart disease in a number of ways. Maintaining a healthy weight and ensuring your blood pressure and cholesterol are no-brainers. However, remember that smoking, diet and activity levels all make a significant difference in your cardiac health as well.
